MONOPOLI -  Cultura e Spettacolo

The myth of a bass

-      Monopoly: Francesco Petracchi
by Vito D. Liuzzi

Three memorable days and at the same time spent in the historic seat of the State Conservatory of Music of Monopoly. For the third consecutive year, the famous  M. ° Petracchi held its Master Class in the town of Monopoli and which was attended by more than forty talented young bass from all over Italy. A meeting strongly desired by the director of the Conservatory of Monopoly, the ° Giampaolo M. Schiavo, by his vice-director, M. Michele Cellaro ° and the 'entire board of directors of this institution of High Culture. Master Petracchi well as being universally considered internationally one of the largest and most venerable bass soloists exquisitely classic,  himself in a career that lasts for more than forty-five years, a constant and inexhaustible activism that has led him to perform substantially in all the larger theaters of the world and, recently, also in robes of esteemed director d 'orchestra. Addressing face to face the figure "mythical" the Master was not easy for all parties to the Master Class. This year  lessons have been a real "summa encyclopedic" on all aspects of knowledge which may involve an instrument like the bass. Great attention was clearly on the side purely technical interpretation, and so each student was able to live a 'experience to say the least "holistic". But there were also left out the most basic aspects of phenomenology of the bass such as posture, approach of learning the proper development of the instrument, in addition to a number of highly specialized problems that have expanded the knowledge of learners. Not surprisingly, then, the fact that the quality of the parties to the Master Class has been considerably high. Three days of high tension and emotional charge for these young bassists, which have thus tasted the taste and the pleasure of making music together, "side by side" in Petracchi teacher, always available and in some cases (and justifiably) very resolute on the various opinions expressed "ad personam". In the end, so, the “contrabbasso” of only Pierpaolo Mastroleo, Francesco Saverio Piccareta, Gianfranco Rizzi and Antonio Mercurio played to the final concert (and without their knowledge!) Took part in the final concert at the Church of Sts. Apostles Peter and Paul, all the same, which Petracchi, among 'others, has performed the first in the world "SCONCERTO" for bass and orchestra of Armando Trovajoli (Mighty renowned composer of soundtracks that accompanied the images of the greatest directors of our time) in excellent piano reduction achieved by M. ° Roberto De Leonardis (and published by Ricordi), which in 'opportunity has accompanied a flawless not only the master Petracchi, but also all the students of the course. All the young performers have been shown to have fully learned the information provided by Maestro, playing songs of the repertoire  very technical and musical mastery and proving, among others, the approval of their own teacher and the large audience for the historic event . "Last but not least 'the implementation of the" SCONCERTO "of Armando Trovajoli, in' interpretation of the master Petracchi bass and Roberto De Leonardis at the piano. A world premiere that has totally captured and catalysed, for well twenty-six minutes or so, l 'attention of those present who, at the end of' execution, have tributed with a long applause (and the demand for a "bis" for which the Master you are not pulled back), the charming and seductive interpretation of a Petracchi extremely exciting. One song, the “Sconcerto”, which was strongly desired by Petracchi and to which the teacher Trovajoli could not say no (although many had been your concern, then allayed, to compose a concerto for bass classic). A 'run that put the first teacher Petracchi to one of the most complex and daring compositions ever written for the bass, wisely all difficulties and successfully overcome thanks to a unique technique and lyricism to an interpretation that has developed magnificently beautiful themes included in art in a context of steps made of high virtuosity, the result of a symbiotic working extremely intelligent and penetrating. But a final eulogy should be made once again at the Conservatory of Monopoly that has even published an 'entire orchestral score of "SCONCERTO", including, before any other, the historical importance of this composition which, in its own right and ex iure ", Has already placed as one of the most important concert ever written at the international level for classic double bass literature . So see you to a master Francesco Petracchi for next year, delighted to host once again and in our region one of the greatest interpreters world that the history of music has ever produced.

GARY KARR and DANIEL NIX - Bottesini (passione amorosa)

vito liuzzi Bottesini writes to Mengoli about his 20 Studies

In few words. I hope my English helps me!!!

This is a famous letter sended to Annibale Mengoli in which Bottesini tells him "to feel the last of the doublebass players".

In fact, when these 20 Studies for doublebass by A.Mengoli were written, they were really difficult, and also today only a good doublebass player can be happy to have been able to perform one of them!!!

Nowadays, the 20 Studies for doublebass by Annibale Mengoli are edited by Yorke Edition with maestro Petracchi's fingerings. It's a good challenge!!!

ABOUT ISAIA BILLE's SIGNATURE

With a bow "Arcus Sinfonia" ... a lot of doubts!! Ops... I've noted that behind me there's a Bottesini "photo" ... perhaps it better to put away it, so he doesn't suffer when I try to study one of his works!
A strange tailpiece

Effectly this is a very strange tailpiece. I have just said to you that it's a dr. Kevin Marvin's invention. You see it on my bass.

Well, first of all I would like to puntualized that I'm testing it and until this moment I'm convinced that it really works. Ok, it's not very beautiful for a doublebass, but it's balanced as you see and wolf tones don't exist. Everyone can have its opinion ! My bass it's not a 12.000 $ doublebass, but with this system I feel that all the instrument vibrates. Sustain is munch longer (also with classical strings like Flexore, Obligato and so on). I don't know! Just suggestion? I'm not going to change for now.

Then if you look I use also a "raise saddle" by italian liuther Sergio Scaramelli. The weight is 2/3  kilograms less, the top seems to vibrate better and sound it's more opened. Sustain, I repeat, in very and very longer!! Naturally also tension strings is lower, with a raise saddle. Is it a "placebo effect" ?? I'm not so sure, but I respect who thinks that these systems don't work. And it's possible, because a good instrument should not have needed of them. But I like to experiment !! Surely on some of my students "Chinese" instruments for the first years, the raise saddle really works ... we have tested it togheter.

Btw. I have inserted this photos just for knowledge ... Bye!

ARCUS SINFONIA BOW ... a lot of doubts about quality/price !!

Really? IMHO, I'm not absolutely satisfied of this Arcus Sinfonia

A good way to carry a doublebass ... or not?'?

My "Romeo Orsi 1890" and a way to set the strings!!

My guitar

hhhmmmm....!!!????

Rock-a-billy but NOT ONLY !!!

"The legends about this concerto say it's Nanny's work, not Dragonetti's. This work has nothing to do with other Dragonetti's works and it's not among the Drag's manuscripts in the British Museum's library."

Here maestro Sciascia has recorded in first absolute the " authentic" Concert in Amajor for db. and "strings" (more two bassons and two horns) by Domenico Dragonetti (no.3).

About the other concerto "more famous" I have some doubts about the real composer: surely he was a work by E. Nanny.
